    Try this little experiment. Go to Google and enter [keyword tool] and click the «I’m feeling lucky» button. This will take you to Google’s External Keyword tool. Put in the type of business you are and then add your geographic location and hit enter. What you get back will be the number of searches made each month for your type business in your service area.

    And perhaps the most surprising statistic, product information and price comparisons are done online but 61% of those products researched are actually purchased offline. That coupled with the fact that 90% of all purchases are made within 50 miles of the consumer’s home speaks volumes to the importance of internet marketing for local business.

    Choose a parking lot where potential clients might be, but does not belong to direct competition. Slide a card or small flyer with a coupon under the wiper blade of some of the cars. It may sound silly, but it works. Experience says one in ten to one in twenty will call or visit.

    Not as big a secret, but still being completely disregarded by most local businesses other than in a few competitive industries. You need reviews. Lots of them. And they need to be on various local search engines. Most critical is Google Places, but reviews are critical on SuperPages, Yahoo, YellowPages, and others.

    Business owners are waking up to the fact that if they are not found online in the search engines, they are going to lose out to their competitors who are. However, they find themselves in unfamiliar territory. They don’t know the first thing about getting ranked in the search engines, they don’t know how to build a website and they don’t want to know.

    This is why working on backlinks is another important strategy. Search engine such as Google rank sites higher based on the number backlinks they have.

    Once I read an article by a writer whose house was filled with ‘stuff’ that were made in China. When she tried to buy some consumer products that were made in USA, she found herself visiting handful of stores without success (like coffeemaker) or found the items (some tools) too expensive to afford. We worry about our present economy and jobs and our children’s future, but it is not enough to worry. We should do something about it.

    Consider your own company website. You may have paid big bucks to publish your online business card — did you? Did you pay for pretty? Or, site;, did you intend to pay to produce more customers? How many new customers did you get last month because of your pretty website? What is your return on that investment?

    Google AdSense — Google does this by changing the way its huge computer systems rank and organize websites. It has to do this because so many people and companies are always trying to game the system. In other words they’re trying to fool the search engine into thinking that one website should be ranked higher than another.
